HAWCE Online Event: The Building Safety Act – what you need to know
This one hour long online event is free to attend
The Building Safety Act is one of the most important pieces of legislation to affect the industry in decades and HAWCE is delighted to be providing two presentations so that you are brought up to date with what is happening and so you can understand the effect of this legislation both legally and commercially.
Steve Green a member of the Bowmer + Kirkland Frameworks Team and Chair of CE Midlands Building Safety Group will look under the hood of the Government Impact Assessment for the Building Safety Bill last published in July 2021. Although withdrawn in 2022 when the Bill became law, the Impact Assessment provides an interesting view of the assumptions made when assessing the cost impact to the industry of the changes proposed. In simple terms the Impact Assessment includes costs for the industry carrying out additional activities to those that would have previously been the norm. Steve will shine a spotlight on the area of quality in both design and construction and how the additional checking regime imposed by the Act is expected to drive down the cost of poor quality generally in construction. Competence is a key requirement of the Act and Steve will hope to trigger some healthy debate about around how the industry can achieve the increase in competence required.
Colin Jones, Partner with Harrison Clark Rickerbys Construction and Engineering Law Team will be presenting an overview of the Building Safety Act 2022. The new Act has been described as one of the most important pieces of legislation to apply to the construction industry in decades. As part of the response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017 in which 72 people lost their lives, the Building Safety Act seeks to set new requirements and standards for all forms of construction, with new regulations applying to the development of residential buildings and their on going occupation, new standards for the development of all forms of buildings, construction products, Architect professional development and a lot more besides. The Act is of importance to contractors, construction professionals, product suppliers and others involved in the building sector.
