HAWCE Event – The Get It Right Initiative & Construction Insurance

Join us at our June HAWCE event and learn about two hot topics – the Get It Right Initiative (GIRI) and Construction Insurance

Presentation 1 – The Get It Right Initiative

Come along and learn who GIRI are and how they are looking to improve industry productivity by targeting the direct and indirect costs of avoidable errors. GIRI’s 2015 research revealed that when unrecorded process waste, latent defects and indirect costs are added to the direct costs of error, the estimated total cost of error ranges between 10% and 25% of project cost or between £10–25Bn per annum across the sector in the UK. The direct costs alone equate to approximately £5Bn per annum which exceeds annual average profit levels.

Learn how GIRI and its members are working to:

  • Create a culture and working environment to get it right from the start
  • Change attitudes and harness leadership responsibility to reduce error and improve construction quality and productivity
  • Engage all stakeholders in eliminating error from inception, through operation, to completion
  • Share knowledge about error reduction processes and systems
  • Improve skills across the sector creating a positive approach to pre-empting error.

Presenting the GIRI objectives and latest developments will be Clifford Smith BSc, C.Eng, FICE. Cliff worked for Sir Robert McAlpine for 38 years before setting up Formright Ltd – a consultancy focused on project design management. Cliff is the Executive Director of Get It Right Initiative Ltd. He is a member of the Design Working Group which developed the GIRI Design Guide, a Member of the Quality Performance Measurement Group which is working on an Error Frequency Ratio and lead Director for the Technology Working Group.

Presentation 2 – Construction Insurance, Thomas Carroll Group PLC

Professional Indemnity
The UK professional indemnity market continues to present serious challenges for businesses and individuals in the construction sector. Whether an architect, surveyor, contractor or inspector, the availability of viable PI insurance is becoming more difficult.

The ‘hard market’ is here for construction PI and looks set to stay for the immediate future.
During this event, we shall discuss these factors, the impact on the construction sector and the steps you can take to secure the right insurance cover.

Presenting these topics will be Douglas Spencer BSc (Hons), ACII Chartered Insurance Broker, Regional Director of the Hereford Office. With 10 years of commercial insurance experience, Dougie has a wealth of knowledge across a variety of business sizes and sectors, ranging from property and construction to rural and leisure risks.

Paul Hughes ACII Chartered Insurance Broker, Associate Director. With over 30 years of industry experience, including 7 years with Taylor Woodrow plc, specialising in corporate and complex risks across a variety of trade sectors including construction, utilities, real estate, airports and high tech companies.
